When driving at night, safety should be the primary concern for all drivers. Remember its not always yourself you need to be cautious of. Even with fewer cars on the road, statistically most fatal car accidents happen when driving at night than at any other time of day. With our ability to see the road ahead impaired at night, darkness can alter a drivers ability to handle normal driving conditions and then if you multiply that by being tired … you have a disaster waiting to happen. With driving at night being such a dangerous task we should really pay attention to our surroundings. Also preventive maintenance is one of the best ways to protect yourself from a potentially hazardous situation while on the road. Here are some tips for driving at night to keep you safe.

One major difference between driving at night and driving during the day is visibility. At night, we become completely dependent on artificial sources of light to help us see and show us where we are going. Highway signs, pedestrians, and other vehicles are harder to see also. Thus, lights, mirrors, and windows are important to use while driving at night. We should maintain clear, clean and scratch-free mirrors and windows. They should not be clouded by steam, frost, water droplets or tarnished by cracks or scratches, and in some states you will receive a ticket for a cracked windshield.

Your cars lighting equipment should be in good condition to ensure maximum visibility. New Automotive Parts has a wide variety of car parts that will play a BIG roll in your safety when driving at night. It never hurts to have your lights turned on especially at night and during periods of rain, snow, hail, sleet or fog. Be sure your headlights are properly aimed, if you installed them your owners manual will be able to assist you in accomplishing this task. Once youre done have your lights checked by a professional to make sure that all the lights work properly. Remember your lights are your only communication with others on the road. Always make sure that your windshield is clean and clear so you have an unobstructed view of what is ahead of you. One common mistake that that drivers do at night is driving with your bright lights facing towards on coming traffic, this will pose a huge problem as the other driver is completely blinded.

Even after being a safe driver and taking the Driving at Night Tips into consideration there is not just one thing to make sure you are always safe when on the road. So there are a number of things to check. Headlights as and other lights on the vehicle, mirrors, windows and windshields all play a role in keeping you safe when driving at night and those are only a few tips. When purchasing auto parts a good tip is to stick with a reliable and trusted parts store.

With gas prices just coming down from sky high most individuals who are on the road are interested in ways they can improve fuel efficiency and save as much money as possible. Even though we cant keep your car full of gas without filling up, we can offer some tips that help save money and improve fuel efficiency in the long run.

Improve Fuel Efficiency Tip #1 Turn on and Drive
This might seem obvious, but when you start your car you should begin your journey. However, many people start their vehicle and leave it idling for a while or even spark a conversation with the neighbor. Instead when you start you vehicle drive off and only keep your car running when it is necessary.

Improve Fuel Efficiency Tip #2 Dont Ride the Breaks
At times drivers tend to hit the break more often than needed. Instead look for an open lane to switch to rather than to slow down for traffic in front of you. By not riding the break and ” coasting ” you can improve fuel efficiency by a dramatic amount.

Improve Fuel Efficiency Tip #3 Turn Off Your Car
If you are going to stop and chit chat with a neighbor, waiting for someone, or going to be stopping for more than 10 minutes you should turn off your car.

Improve Fuel Efficiency Tip #4 Dont Turn Off Your Car
If you are just saying hello to a neighbor on your way out or stopping for a brief moment, less than 5 minutes then dont turn off your car because turning your car back on from the off position will consume more gas than just sitting there.

Improve Fuel Efficiency Tip #5 Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated
Drivers tend to forget about their tires unless one goes flat. However, having properly inflated tires can improve fuel efficiency, saving you money. This is why you should check your tire pressure on a regular basis.

The tips above are only a few ways to improve fuel efficiency and if you use them you will start to see a change.

Today’s cars can easily top the 100,000 mile mark with many cars on the road exceeding 150,000, 200,000, even 250,000 miles. Owners of high-mileage cars get to this point purely due to their personal thorough and precise maintenance schedules. There are several tips that you can use to extend your own car’s life.

A regular car maintenance schedule for your vehicle, would make it possible to extend the life of your car much more than what you expected it to be when you bought it. Today a proper car maintenance schedule can will make it possible for you to get to the 100,000 mile mark and with many cars on the road being able to exceed 150,000, 200,000 or even 250,000 miles. Owners of high-mileage cars all have one thing in common to get to this point and that would of course be . . . you guessed it a regularly maintained car maintenance schedule. Here are several tips that you can use to extend the life of your current vehicle.

Rotating your tires – Even wear on your tires will help ensure your car stops properly when the breaks are applied, and stays on the road. When you have your tires rotated you should ask the car shop to also check your brakes and shock absorbers to avoid possible handling and control issues.

Transmission fluid – Your transmission isnt assured to run ceaselessly. Change your fluid at manufacturer prescribed intervals, generally once every 30 thousand, or 60 thousand miles. If you neglect your transmission car maintenance schedule, you could face costly repairs and potentially fatal consequences (to the car, obviously).

Oil Changes – The ‘ 30 minute oil change ‘ specialists advise that you change your oil every 3,000 miles or every three months whichever comes sooner. Whereas, some manufacturers state you only have to to change your oil approx. every 5,500 miles or six months. Decide on recurrent oil changes rather than the lengthy manufacturer suggested intervals. When you change your oil you should also have your oil filter changed as well.

Draining the radiator – Also dont forget about the radiator car maintenance schedule that will need to be put in place. Swapping the antifreeze will assist in flushing out rust and dirt particles that clog up your cooling system. When the coolants rust inhibitors get used up then corrosion will show up within the radiator as well as in the engine block

Changing the spark plugs – Some manufacturers pre install ‘long life’ spark plugs, which means that changing spark plugs once every 60 thousand or even 90 thousand miles is a possibility. Bear in mind that the longer your spark plugs sit in place, the more difficult it may be to remove them later on. In actuality, changing your spark plugs once every 30 thousand miles is perfect.

Examining your exhaust system – Your muffler, catalytic converter, and remaining exhaust system parts can wear out over time. A poorly functioning exhaust system robs your engine of much needed power.

Changing your air filter – Your vehicles engine will run better and smoother if you change your air filter at least once every year; more so if you do a lot of “stop and go” driving or put on many more miles annually than an average motorist does.

Washing and waxing – Agreed, your car may mechanically run well, but if the main body falls apart, then what are you left with? Regular washings and a wax job at least once a year ought to do the trick.

Routine Car Maintenance – Replace your battery, fuel filter, PCV valve, belts, and hoses as needed. Along with a long list of other things that will have to eventually be replaced, you may have to replace your knock or oxygen sensors if and/or when the problem arises.

In the end, refer to the cars repair book to follow their car maintenance schedule recommendation procedures of when to perform certain tasks. The fundamental key to extending your vehicles life is in doing the maintenance when needed. Otherwise you will be neglecting your car to the point where it may actually give out on you ahead of time.

In the last couple of years we have seen many car makers offering free maintenance upon purchase of their vehicle. This is an additional incentive for car buyers to buy their cars but the question is, is free maintenance really free? Let us take a look at what they call “free maintenance”.

Free coverage maintenance differs from one carmaker to another. This means in some it is free tire rotation while to others this means total maintenance for usually up to four years. Free maintenance is like a warranty. The free vehicle maintenance programs is offered for lease or bought cars. It is also transferrable. This means when you sell the vehicle, the succeeding owner will get to enjoy the coverage. Of course there are things that are considered for the maintenance to be free, such as the mileage and the time coverage. Now to see the difference in coverage, we must take a look at the different carmakers.

The most comprehensive of the free maintenance is BMW’s. Their Ultimate Service program is free maintenance for up to four years or up to 50,000 miles. This includes wearable parts, such as wiper blades and break pads. Saab, although not as comprehensive as BMW’s also offer free maintenance. While Mercedes Benz only offers limited free maintenance, free diagnostic check and free tire rotation, which is usually offered by most dealerships.

For the latest models, Volkswagen has the Carefree Maintenance Programs for their 2009 models and other selected models. This includes scheduled maintenance at every 10,000 miles until 30,000 miles. Scion on the other hand, offers free oil change since 2004. Then last year, they added scheduled maintenance visit. This year Volvo now offers extended free maintenance. Some carmakers however downgraded their coverage. Land Rover for one downgraded to only one scheduled maintenance visit instead of their up to0 45,000 miles.

So is free maintenance really free and can save you money ? Well generally yes. However, that is if you buy high-priced vehicles since their maintenance can cost you thousands of dollars and since they are the ones which offer the best services. Nevertheless, if you buy less expensive cars, you do get to save on the initial service. Convenience wise, you do not have to go around dealers yet for service. Plus with the free maintenance, regardless of coverage, this is like your warranty. With the coverage, you will get to enjoy good service for your vehicle.
