Driving Under The Influence Drunk Driving Laws
Driving Under The Influence ??? Many states are now cracking down on drunk driving with strict drunk driving laws. For instance, in Ohio, OVI (operating vehicle while intoxicated) offenders are given different plates. Instead of the usual license plates a DUI offender, should the judge decide, will be issued yellow plates with serial numbers in red color. Yes, so instead of just having driving privileges restricted after one DUI conviction, these drivers are also be publicly shamed. In Iowa, if you are drunk driving and convicted of driving under the influence and will have your plates will have the letter Z displayed. In Minnesota, instead of a single letter, a drunk driver license plate will have a series of numbers that again tell they do not follow drunk driving laws and have been convicted of driving under the influence. Similarly, in Oregon, the plates will have display a drunk driver sticker. And according to one study, DUI offenders with labeled license plates as compared to offenders with out different plates, had a less number of moving violations, DUI offenses and repeated DUI offenses. This is the reason why many states are pushing for drunk driving laws such as these.
As for insurance companies, they can and probably will cancel your car insurance policy if your drivers license got suspended if you are convicted of felony DUI. Usually an auto insurance provider will raise the rates for coverage if they were convicted of driving under the influence. However, many insurance companies today simply cancel or refuse to renew their policies as obviously you are a HIGH risk to insure.
Even though you are supposed to have car insurance at all time, if you have a serious offense like DUI you will be required to maintain proof of insurance for up to five years, depending on your state. Whats the difference you ask ?? Well imagine having to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles EVERY MONTH just so you dont have to spend a few nights in jail. Also, your insurance company will be required by the DMV to provide them with the famous SR-22 form. This form means that your insurance company will notify the DMV if they cancel your car insurance or you no longer carry insurance with that them. If you are required to have the SR-22 it means that you are now considered a high risk driver. This also means that your insurance company can cancel your policy any time or not renew your insurance. Of course, should they decide to do so, you will be notified accordingly. Should that happen you will, of course need to find another car insurance provider immediately. And since you are now a high risk and have had a cancellation, you will have a hard time finding another company and will have to pay higher rate. Another thing you should remember is that not all insurance companies have SR-22 so in case your company does not carry one and you are now required to have one because of your conviction, you will be forced to find another insurance company. And Cheap DUI Car Insurance is not easy to find
