Over 65 Years Old and Driving Safely

If you are 65 years old or older, then driving safely should be a main concern. Even though you reaction time and other things may not be what they used to be it does not mean that you need to be the victim of over priced auto insurance coverage. In fact, it is quite the opposite. An aging driver could easily be eligible for discounts on car auto insurance.

Older drivers may be eligible for various discounts depending on which auto insurance company you use. A number of insurance companies that provide insurance for more than just one kind of insurance, offer policy holders who purchase multiple insurance policies decent discounts. Some people choose to buy both, auto insurance policies, as well as homeowners insurance policies through the same company. In doing so, they receive discounts on their insurance premiums.

If you are 65 or older and have been driving safely for the last few years, you are in luck because there are a few insurance companies that offer discounts to aging drivers who have excellent driving records. This is for a variety of reasons. Drivers of certain ages, usually about fifty or more, who have been driving for a while, and are seen at being less of a risk than newer drivers. Keep traffic accidents and other violations to a bare minimum, if possible, non existent, and try to drive the least amount of miles a year.

Such programs are designed to sharpen, and refresh driving skills. Along with this, they also act as a means to renew defensive driving tactics.

If you belong in the seniors group then you know what they say about your driving skills. Well, of course you have done a lot of driving over the years, probably more than those who think you should be kept off of the street for the majority of the populations safety. And of course you have to agree that you are not as good of a driver as you once were in your prime.

Also, to be more on the safe side, you should start avoiding crowded places and take alternate routes instead. If possible try to limit your driving to close to home and familiar routes.

Another way for you to make sure you drive safely is to take driving classes for drivers 55 years of age and above. There are actually many classes you can take, such as the American Association of Retired Persons drivers safety program. Their class is for drivers age 50 years and above and the best thing about their program is that upon completion, you will be given a certificate which entitles you to premium discounts on most insurance companies.

One of the major problems of seniors driving is their cognitive capabilities. According to one study, a driver is 25% more likely to get into a vehicular accident if he fails in a cognitive test. The good thing about cognitive skills is that they can be rehabilitated since the brain cells can be stimulated to grow with mental exercises. The brain will then adjust to the situation and the cognitive skill will be improved. You can then do mental exercises to improve your cognitive skills which will of course improve your driving skills significantly.
